Kids Who Bird

This exciting program is designed for kids who are interested and excited about birds. If you're a kid between the ages of 9 and 16 who likes birds and wants to know more about them, this club is for you. We'll learn about the birds you can find right here in Baton Rouge, as well as other places in Louisiana. We'll learn about the migratory birds that we'll see only as they pass through our state -- but lots of birds do that, and it means we can see some really great birds.

Kid Birder

Update July 2020 - Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, meetings will be held online rather than in person

Please see our Events calendar for any scheduled events.

Who can join

Kids between ages 9 and 16 who are interested in birds. To join, please write a short note and/or include a drawing indicating why you want to join the club. Have your parents send this note and/or drawing to I will notify you that I've received your letter and will send out a welcome packet.

As long as Covid-19 restrictions are in place and we are having virtual meetings, any kid in Louisiana can join. Once we have in-person meetings again, we'll have to see how to proceed.

We'll plan to meet once a month on a weekday night. The meetings will focus on bird education. At each meeting we will go through a "meet and greet" and allow time for bird stories. Then we'll listen to a presentation and discuss it afterward. I will also give out assignments for independent work for club members in between our meetings.

CURRENTLY WE ARE NOT CHARGING FEES FOR THIS CLUB! At some point, if significant expenses are incurred, we may begin charging a small annual fee.

Once we are able to meet again and do bird walks Binoculars are available for those who want to borrow them, so you'll be able to get a good look at the birds. Field guides that contain bird identification information are also available, so you'll be able to tell what you're looking at! In addition to learning to identify birds by sight, we'll spend a lot of time listening to the birds and learning to identify them by the sounds they make. Each member will keep a "life list" of all the birds they identify (by sight or sound!) when we go out on our field trips around Baton Rouge and other places in Louisiana.

The club is geared towards children ages 9 to 16 and their parents (not appropriate for younger children as it is difficult for them to use binoculars and field guides). Club members will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the various meeting sites.

If you have questions, or are interested in joining the club, contact Jane Patterson with the Baton Rouge Audubon Society by email at for membership information.
